Area VII Young Riders Newsletter December 2012 update

2012 has been an excellent year for the Area VII YR program. We have a large membership of over 90 riders from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana and our program continues to grow and thrive. We held numerous activities; both educational and social for our Young Riders. Here are some of the program highlights in 2012.

Our 2012 YR program started off with Young Rider awards honoring Area VII YR member's 2011 achievements at the Area VII annual meeting in January. We held a get together giving prospective or returning members a chance to gather information and ask questions. In April, we held our annual spring clinic in Eastern Washington at Tulipsprings Farm where our Young Riders received dressage and jumping lessons from Jean Moyer and Stephanie Goodman. This first of the season clinic was a great opportunity for our members to receive excellent instruction and to be able to ride cross country on the "dry" side of Washington.

Young Rider socials are becoming a regular event at many Area VII Horse Trials. With the help of YR families planned fun and entertaining activities. Scavenger Hunts, Charades and Balloon tosses helped Young Riders get to know each other and offered opportunities for members to start working together as a team.

In our third year, the Developing Rider Team program is looked forward to by many Young Riders. At three designated events YR's at the BN- T levels are notified by "stall mail" that they have been chosen to be on a YR team. Riders are chosen by the current YR coach along with a YR parent and teams are based on previous event records. Members are placed on an "A" or "B" team promoting friendly competition between the teams. All teams who finish the competition receive great prizes. We believe this is a great way to help recognize developing riders and start to promote the team spirit.

Our Area VII YR camp continues to be a highlight of the program. Outgoing coach, Jonathan Elliott, incoming coach, Jessica Heidemann, former YR coach, Jean Moyer and former Canadian YR, Hawley Bennett, worked long hours with 35 Young Rider's over four days. Evening activities, programs and great food along with the excellent instruction at the beautiful Aspen Farms made for another fabulous camp.

The Area VII Young Rider program proudly sent two riders, two grooms and a Mentorship participant to NAJYRC at the Kentucky Horse Park this summer. NAJYRC is great experience for Young Riders to learn to be a part of a team, practice good sportsmanship and compete against the nation's best Young Riders at the beautiful Kentucky Horse Park. We are proud of Lizzie Snow who helped her Two Star team win the Gold medal and her great riding earned her the individual Silver medal. Maria Schatz, in her first NAJYRC One Star, did not finish but could not have been a better representative of our YR program. Kaylan Schaber excelled in the Mentorship program and spent time with almost every official at Championships! Our two grooms, Olivia Schatz and Jordan Beckingham, along with coach, Jessica Heidemann completed the team.

We are fortunate to have the opportunity to raise funds by hosting a recognized Benefit Horse Trials at Pat and Lynn Mahoney's Lincoln Creek each August. Led by Anni Grandia this fundraiser requires many, many Young Riders to volunteer throughout the week of the event. This fundraiser, while earning dollars for our varied program, continues to build a sense of camaraderie and ownership in the Area VII YR program. We couldn't accomplish this large undertaking without the support of many Young Riders, families and supporters of the program.

We look forward to the coming year and are encouraged by our strong membership, the enthusiasm of our new coach, Jessica Heidemann, and the excitement building within the program. We look forward to providing many opportunities for our Young Riders to continue to be competitive, represent our Area, and build lasting friendships and a lifelong love for the sport of Eventing.
