Area VII Important Announcements – FALL 2010
Young Riders at Galway Event
Over the past several years we have sent YR representatives to Galway to the West Coast Team Championship in November. Unfortunately the YR Team competition is now longer being held as part of this event. We would still like to support Area VII Young Riders who are planning on competing this fall at Galway. Current Area VII Young Riders who will be competing at the Preliminary level and above have the opportunity to represent Area VII.
Those participating with the Area VII Young Riders will receive the following:
Coaching will be provided by Area VII Young Rider coach Jonathan Elliott for all three phases. Coaching fees will be paid for by Area VII.
Riders will have the use of team saddle pads, helmet covers and stall guards.
Each rider will receive an Area VII Team polo.
Young Riders will pay $200.00 towards entry fee.
Stable management help/ groom help during the event will be provided.
Team will fee paid, if there are enough Area VII participants.
In order to be eligible for the above the following is required:
Intent to participate at Galway with Area VII Young Riders must be received by Piper Cheney, via email, no later than October 10th with the commitment to use the Area VII Young Rider coach for all three phases.
YR’s may do course walks with individual coaches, as long as time permits.
Rider will agree to wear team colors and use team equipment and return it at the end of use.
A check for $200.00 towards entry will be sent to the rider after the competition.
Rider must start the dressage phase of the event.
A code of conduct will be required.
The chance to represent Area VII Young Riders at Galway will be great preparation for members who aspire to ride at the North American Young Rider Championships in Lexington, KY. This prestigious event is held each summer at the Kentucky Horse Park. The above requirements are the same as those expected at NAJY RC. A YR member should consider this great training for NAJYRC should the rider qualify and be chosen to represent Area VII in Kentucky. The Area VII YR program will be providing coaching, not training for both Galway and NAJYRC. Your own trainer has laid the groundwork for you. This is the same format and expectations that you would be required to adhere to if you were representing the US at any type competition.
Please contact me no later than October 10th if you are interested in riding at Galway for Area VII.
October Clinic
As a final YR clinic for 2010 we are offering a Fall clinic at Aspen Farms October 23 and 24th.
Jumping Instruction on Saturday will be given by Jonathan Elliott
Dressage instruction will be given on Sunday, instructor TBA.
The cost for the clinic which includes two nights stabling and two days of instruction is $180.00.
Riders going to Galway are especially encouraged to attend.
Please email me by October 10th if you are planning on attending this clinic.
2010 Young Rider Year in Review
A Young Rider track was added to the annual Area VII meeting held in Gig Harbor, in January. Seminars were offered specifically designed for educating Young Rider members. A hotel room was provided where Young Riders could socialize and have snacks.
Young Rider awards were presented at the USEA annual meeting.
Clinics for the Area VII Young Rider program were held three times this year, including our annual spring camp at Tulipsprings in Kennewick.
A successful YR camp was held at Aspen Farms in early July. 35 horse and rider combinations received great instruction, great food and enjoyed evening activities including a How to Fall Safely seminar and a great talk on conditioning by Dr. Sarah Owens. Thank you to Shana Clancy, Peggy Lynch, The Benge family, Roz Eldridge, Holly Haeger and Anni Grandia and for all your help at camp!
Completion ribbons were available to all Young Riders at Aspen, Inavale, Whidbey and the YR Benefit.
The annual scavenger hunt and cupcake social was held at Aspen. An ice cream social was held at Inavale and a charades challenge against the Canadian Young Riders was held at Whidbey HT.
Riders were supported at the Inavale half star giving members a chance to participate in their first YR team competition.
A new team program was implemented for riders at the BN through Training level. This team competition was held at Inavale and the Young Rider Benefit. Riders were chosen based on past performance to ride on Team A or Team B, First place teams received $50.00 gift certificates to Gallops Saddlery and second place teams received $25.00 Gallops certificates. Please thank Gallops for helping to sponsor this program! Please note that by April 15th, 2011 Young Rider memberships must have been received by the USEA for members to be eligible to participate in the 2011 Team Program. Thank you to Jay Benge and Jonathan Elliott for the development of this program!
Young Rider Benefit Horse Trials was a huge success its first year at Lincoln Creek. Anni Grandia worked very hard to make this event happen if a very short time frame. A special thank you to dozens of YR‘s and their families for helping make this year’s event so wonderful! Thank you to all of our sponsors for their generous donations!
North American Young Rider Championships at the Kentucky Horse Park was amazing. Lizzie Snow represented Area VII Young Riders at the One Star Championship on Pop Star. Lizzie and Pop won the Bronze medal individually and also were a part of the winning Gold Medal Team. Tessa Beckett and Sound Prospect rode for Area VII at the Two Star Championship and earned fourth individually and also the Team Silver! A huge thank you to our YR coach Jonathan Elliott, our vet Mitch Byrd and grooms extraordinaire Sarah Clancy and Hanna Roberts for helping our riders be so successful. We couldn’t have done it without them!
In July new logo clothing was added to the YR inventory and was offered for sale at the YR Benefit.
Whew! I hope I included everything!! It was a busy year and I hope we achieved our goal of adding activities and programs for all levels. Please contact me if you have any ideas or comments about the program. We are always looking for ways to improve!
